CTE Month highlights

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month happens every February and is used to advertise what classes are available to sophomores and juniors as they make schedules for the next school year. Head CTE coordinator Brian Blake said, “CTE month is an entire month because there are so many great skills and activities that students have access to gain.” Some of the feature events of CTE Month are the Region Culinary Arts competition FCCLA competes in, Sweethearts week and dance put on by FFA, and the state DECA competition.

FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America and they focus on service and skill-enhancement such as finance, cooking, and nutrition. FCCLA is described by Mrs. Heaps as, “an area where they learn a lot of life skills that, even if they don’t use them in their professional career, they’re skills that they need to learn for life.” It’s considered a CTE class because a lot of the curriculum that’s taught fits into that category. Along with their curriculum FCCLA has a region competition during CTE month. This competition placed 7 people to compete at state.

DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America and their focus is on business and marketing. DECA is an international organization which is highlighted in their mission statement: DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Mrs. Kelly, the advisor, made a point to mention that DECA teaches not only skills in business but skills for life.  DECA members attend a state competition during CTE month where they mock pitching marketing ideas. This competition enables them to practice speaking the business and marketing lingo; congratulations to the students who placed at this competition!

FFA stands for Future Farmers of America and is also a national organization implemented primarily for students. The organization’s main goal is to prepare members for careers in agriculture by giving them hands-on experience and leadership opportunities. The FFA motto is only twelve words, short and sweet: Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. During CTE month FFA takes charge of Sweethearts, both the daily activities and the dance itself. Not only that, but they’re also preparing for their state competition all month which falls in the second week of March. FFA does so much for Payson High, primarily by being such a fabulous example of unity and education.

HOSA stands for Health Occupations Students of America and is an organization that allows students to gain technical and leadership skills in the medical field. They focus on four main values: learning, leadership, service, and innovation.  Ous PHS students have had several opportunities to become familiar with medical practices in Payson’s community through field trips and service.

CTE month here at Payson High was very successful with wins for Speech and Debate, DECA, and FCCLA in their region competitions. Several students have qualified for their respective state competitions, good luck to them all! CTE is an integral part of education nowadays and students are privileged to have such strong programs here at Payson.
