Dark Horse: Carter Figgins

Sweat, blood, hard work, and determination all make up the definition of an athlete.  Those people on our teams here at Payson High that work their guts out because they love it, not because people are watching. They push themselves because they can, because they want to prove that they are the best.   Every teams has one, or even many here at Payson High School.

Football is a major part of our school.  Our team works hard, and never gives up even when the odds are against them.  So who might you ask is the ‘Dark Horse’ of our mighty Lions football team?  Coach Chapman had no doubt in his mind when he quickly replied to the question with ‘Carter Figgins’.

"Carter has been one of the most dedicated and hardworking players I have ever coached.  I knew I could trust Carter.  I could trust him to do his job to the best of his ability, I could trust him to prepare mentally and physically to win and I could trust him to do what is right off the field.  He is exactly the type of young man I want representing Payson High and I am proud to of had the opportunity to coach him." Said Chapman.

He’s not the only one that agrees though.  Fellow Teammates appreciate his hard work love for the sport.

“He makes practice hilarious.  He is a stud.” Brian Hoschouer said.

A dark horse is someone who works hard.  Someone who is dedicated and determined.  He never gives up, and doesn’t take no for an answer.  He also knows how to have fun.  The game isn’t worth it unless you’re enjoying it, he knows this and lives it.  Chapman, the assistant coaches, and most of the football boys will agree that this Defines Carter Figgins Perfectly.

“I love football mostly because it’s just fun.  It’s fun running away from people and trying not to get hit.  Of course you have to block sometimes too, so then you get hit.  It’s just fun.”  Figgins said.  “My idol is probably my older brother.  He played one year and because of that I figured i could play too.”

Football is a game of wits.  Who thinks faster, who hits harder and who runs faster.  It’s an action packed game filled pain and intensity.  If you ask any football player from any position, they will tell you that it’s no easy sport.  Every position takes hours and hours of practice.  Especially receiver.  A receiver needs to be able to read the defense, to understand his quarterback, and to handle the ball with accuracy and coordination, but Carter Figgins loves the position.

“I started playing in 9th grade because all my friends were playing and they convinced me to play with them.  I love the fast pace and the action of the sport.” Figgins said.

So who is Carter Figgins?  He is a hard working student and athlete, a dedicated player, an amazing teammate.  He is the dark horse.
