Debate at PHS

Submitted by kate.searle on

The debate team represented Payson High School well this year during the state competitions. The debate state competition was held March 11, and 12 at Alta High School. Two of the PF teams progressed to win a couple of rounds, and two original oratories progressed to semi finals. Several other debaters also did very well. When asked about state, Addy Elliott, a member of the PHS debate team said, “It was a super fun experience, and I’m grateful for the learning opportunity.” Great job to everyone who participated in state for debate!

Several members were asked about their experience with being on the debate team this year, and here's what a couple of them had to say:

Garrett Lopez:

“My name is Garrett Lopez, and this year I had the opportunity to participate in debate. I  debated in several debate tournaments, including region and state. Debate is a lot of work! But the work is worth it because it pays off in the end. Not only can I win an argument and get what I want, there's a huge feeling of success. Debate also teaches a lot of valuable tools that are useful in life, such as; the ability to talk in front of others, handle yourself and speak in a professional manner, and build self confidence. I strongly encourage you to join debate.”

Lily Wimmer:

“Speech and Debate is a lot of fun, especially the competitions, the whole team had the chance to go to Regions. It was very competitive but everyone at Payson did very well. It's also a great place to meet new people from different high schools. Speech and Debate is a great class to take, you can learn good public speaking skills and you get a college credit. I would recommend Speech and Debate for everyone.”

Debate gives you many great experiences for your high school career, plus it’s fun! So talk to Mrs. Ralph, the debate teacher, and sign up quick!
