It is a big responsibility and honor to be chosen as a sterling scholar and there is a lot of preparation and effort that goes into applying and winning the title. Deseret News described the experience as this, “The Sterling Scholar Awards and publicly recognizes and encourages the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership and citizenship of high school seniors in the state of Utah.” The Sterling Scholars at Payson High School have found great success with this program. Here are some of their tips for you to become a successful Sterling Scholar and why they participated in the program.

Mathematics: Brendon Earl

“ I did sterling scholars because I wanted the recognition that I worked really hard in math, I studied a lot. I wanted a little recognition, it also helps me a lot with my college applications. I think that Juniors and Sophmores should consider doing sterling scholars because you get your picture up in the hall and a page in the yearbook, that’s pretty cool. “

World Languages: Jaycee Wilson

“I have participated in  ASL and Concurrent Enrollment classes, I have also been involved in the community and  leadership opportunities this made it possible for me to do sterling scholar. I actually hope to work in the hospital as a nurse. In the hospital they need someone on hand who can interpret and communicate with those who are deaf. My advice is to be involved in clubs, it’s not really about your grades, just stay involved and keep track of all the service you are doing!”

Vocal Performance: Brandon Harris

“Back in eighth grade I decided that I was going to do everything I could to get sterling scholar in vocal performance. It was just a thought in a friendly conversation. That's really where it all started. I wanted the extra help with college. I have made tons of sacrifices to get this award, I have spent countless hours doing homework because I hopped on the honors track in the ninth grade. I have participated in 5 state level honors choirs, I spend time learning music, I take  voice lessons once a week, I am learning advanced music like singing in different languages such as German, French, and Italian. My advice would be to make sure you have a lot of participation in things relating to your area and to keep track of your service hours”

Musical Performance: JoLyn Paddock

“My advice for people who are considering doing sterling scholars is to know you want to be a sterling scholar because the deadlines and those things come really fast. About the middle of September is when everything is due. Be sure to have a good portfolio put everything in sheet protectors with nice paper, you just want your binder to look professional.”

Overall the main thing that our sterling scholars want you to learn is “Don't be afraid to try, don't be afraid to fail. It’s not about perfect grades, it’s being passionate about the things you are passionate about, go out there and show people you can do it.” said sterling scholar Jose' Valle. Be sure to talk to our school counselors about how you can get on track to becoming a Sterling Scholar!
