The Girls are Bawlin' Basketball

Coming into a season with little senior leadership sometimes poses difficulties for a basketball team, but not for the boy’s basketball team at Payson High School. The team that doesn’t have a senior on the roster has jumped out to a great start in the 2009- 2010 season. The Lions are showing that they are a force with wins over Union and Dixie. The young lions are really flexing their muscle especially on the offensive side of the ball. By the numbers the Lions are shooting just under 50 percent from the field this season and a scorching 36 percent from behind the arch. The Lions are scoring on average 53 points a game this season. The Lions have been really stroking it from 3 point range being lead by BJ Ford who carries the load with 13 points a game, while Clint Bateman, Kolton Jewett, and Braden Wright all throw in 10 points a game respectively. BJ leads the team in overall scoring with 49 on the season and a season high of 19 against Union. Clint leads the team in assists with 5 and also with steals with just under 3 a game. One of the Lion’s main goals every year is own the boards and grab every rebound, Kolton Jewett has come up huge on the boards ripping down 8 boards a game and a team high 32 on the season.   The Lions are a very young team this season, and thus far through the season Coach Lunt is impressed with what he is seeing. He believes that this team has the pieces to put together a fine season in region 8. He also believes that this team has the potential to make a deep run in the Utah State 4A tournament and expects nothing less than a state title (as he does every year). This team is putting in the work in practice to go far this season, and with a few more weeks of preseason/ non region games the lions have time to put all the little things together. Good job to the boys thus far and good luck the rest of the way.
