Girl's Soccer: Payin' the Price

There were doubts going into this season and no one can argue that with early injuries and losses. The girls’ soccer team started the season off to a 2-5 record, but the girls were confident from the beginning of the season that they were going to do an awesome job in region play.

“We are thrilled that we got first in region, now our first state game gets to be at home and we are in a good seed,” said Senior Captain Ciera Lundberg.

With the teams’ most recent 2-1 victory over Morgan, the girls won their first state game in Payson Girls’ Soccer history. In Region play the girls this year won 8 games and only let up one tie against North Sanpete.

“It feels fantastic to be region champions, that was our goal at the beginning of the season and it feels great to have achieved it,” said Sophomore Captain Hallie Neves.

With our new region this year it didn’t make it any easier, Head Coach Andrew Wright believes in pushing his team to the full extent and even if they won’t be the best team they will be the best conditioned. Plenty of hard days at practice went into forming this year’s solid team.

“They have had the best record in Payson Girls’ Soccer history, winning the region for the first time since 1996 which was before most of them were born, with 6 seniors who had played all 4 years,” Wright said.

On and off the field this is a great group of girls. They have snatched region champs and are well on their way to the state championship. This season had its ups and downs as all sports seasons do. Injuries and losses have sought to bring down the teams unity. Yet through all the trials these girls have fought through and clenched the title as Region 12 champions!
