The Students of the Payson High School Orchestras have some amazing songs to perform for their upcoming Halloween Concert on Oct. 23, 2018! Gentry Stickney, the orchestra director of all the orchestra groups, said, “We are playing a great mixture of classical pieces, songs from movies, and original works for this concert. For the Halloween concert, I try to keep a spooky and quirky theme going throughout the evening.”

Stickney continued, describing the pieces her beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes have worked so hard on. “The Concert strings will start off by playing a piece called Stargazer by Robert Buckley, followed by a classical number, Night On Bald Mountain, written by Russian composer, Modest Mussorgsky, as well as a moody piece by Adrian Gordon called Apocalypse. The Philharmonic orchestra will be playing two pieces. One is from the Tim Burton film The Nightmare Before Christmas called This is Halloween. Their second piece is the classic by Edvard Grieg, In the Hall of the Mountain King. Chamber, the auditioned group will be playing a wide variety of pieces to show off their skills and versatility. They will perform two intense classical pieces. The first will be a rock version of Toccata and Fugue by J.S. Bach which will feature soloists on electric instruments. We will then be performing Giuseppe Verdi's Day of Wrath. The group will then take it down a notch with a beautiful medley from the 90's film, Edward Scissorhands, and finish off with a wild piece called Swamp Thang by Richard Meyer.

To end the night, all the orchestras will join together on stage with the advanced orchestra from Mt. Nebo Junior High to perform Michael Jackson's Halloween classic, Thriller. It will be an impressive display as we will have nearly 100 students performing on stage at once.”

When Stickney was asked how excited she was for the concert, she said, “I am incredibly excited for our first concert of the year. It will be a fun-filled night and the students have worked so hard. I love the Halloween concert because it is a great opportunity for the musicians and the audience to realize that there is exciting and beautiful music across all genres. It's going to be a party. ” In other words, come enjoy the music and show some support for the students of the Payson High School Orchestras as they perform their awesome pieces.
