The Payson High Wrestling team is still on the prowl as the spring sports season comes to a close. Though the high school season may only run through the fall, that doesn’t stop the team from consistently trying to better their selves.  With open gym practices every night, and the boys putting in the extra effort, the team is undoubtedly ready to pin down the fall season.

State champion Josh Jensen, a junior here at Payson High is a big part of the team’s success. Josh has wrestled year round since he was twelve years old, and he even has a wrestling room in his house. On April 26th the mighty wrestler headed up to Farmington to wrestle in freestyle state. The legacy event center was full of cheering fans and after a full day of wrestling Josh had finally made it to the finals.

“I felt calm before my finals match. I was wrestling one of my training partners at the club I wrestle at so I treated it kind of like a practice,” Said Josh

After an intense finals match, Josh came out with a win, 10-9, over Tanner Cox a student from Maple Mountain and a former world team member.

“It felt good to get a win in the finals over this year’s 4A state champion,” Said Jensen “By winning, it qualified me for the Junior National duels where I’ll have the chance to represent team Utah.”

Though Josh was excited for his success, Payson High’s head coach, Mr. Clark was proud to share the news with me and had nothing but positive things to say about Josh,

“Josh works hard all year round and he has put in a lot of time and effort to get the results that he does. He has set some high goals, not only to be the best in Utah, but also to be the best in the country. He’s having a lot of success, and in time he’ll have a lot more. I’m glad that we have this type of leadership on the team,” Said Coach Clark.

When asking josh about his plans for wrestling In the Junior National duels, he beamed with confidence and excitement when he exclaimed that he was pumped and prepared to wrestle,

“I’m just going to make sure I go hard, don’t hurt myself and get my weight down,” Said Jensen

Congratulations Josh, on your success this season, and good luck and Junior Nationals!
