Lady Lions: Shooting for Glory

The Lady Lions had their first region game on January 14 against Juab. They ended up winning 45-49 with a little help from Makenzie Simons who was making shots left and right. This leaves the Lions with a season record of 1-0 so far. Prior to the region games, they were 3-9.

The team has many strengths among the athletes. Co-captain Lauren Hazelet said that it was impossible to narrow down exactly who the most contributing player is.

“Every player on the team contributes in her own way,” said Hazelet. “Mac and Dani are good outside shooters and Mac is really good at rebounding. Alex works year round so she can pretty much shoot from anywhere. Hallie is an awesome ball handler and has got a set of wheels on her. Terissa and Addy (the freshmen) are super scrappy, and McKinley and Nicole do a good job at being leaders on and off the court.”

The girls are feeling pretty good about the season so far. Before region play started, they were constantly playing 4A and 5A teams. Now that the girls are dropping back down to 3A there are some definite wins in the future.

“We’ve been playing bigger teams from bigger schools. This experience helped us to really learn how to play as a team. We have got momentum on our sides with three wins in a row now and making it to the state tournament is definitely in the picture if we keep up the hard work,” said Co-captain McKinley McMullin.

The team’s biggest goal this year is to get to the state tournament. Come cheer them on as they conquer the rest of the region. Their upcoming home games are January 28 against Carbon, January 30 against Juab and February 11 against North Sanpete.
