When it’s time for competition, marching band gets up early and goes home late. Their first competition of the season was on Saturday, September 22, at Utah State University. Percussion placed 2nd overall.  Although they did not score as high overall as they would have liked, band members remain enthusiastic.

“We make an impression, and make a name for ourselves,” said Canyen Heimuli.

The marching band has set a high standard of goals for themselves, and will surely not disappoint.

“I’m optimistic for improvement,” said Kassidy Evans.

Every year the marching band has a different musical theme, this year’s theme is “The Mummy.” There are four movements, one of which is entitled “Archaeologists in Love.” When marching the band makes formations that relate to the theme. One of the formations this season is called an “Onk,” which is an Egyptian symbol.

“There’s a lot of choreography,” said Kassidy Evans, a percussionist.

Marching band is the Marine Corps of all bands. It is not for the faint of heart. It takes time and dedication. Not only do you need to be musically talented to be a part of the marching band, but coordinated. Practices are 3 times a week starting in May and through the entire summer.

You would think that spending so much time with the same people might get old, but with marching band members this is not the case.

“We all come from different places;[Marching Band] is like our second family.” said Canyen Heimuli.
