Coming off a stunning loss to Springville, the Lions looked to regroup against region rival Salem Hills. They started off a little slow, only scoring ten points to Salem’s fifteen. In the second quarter the Lions tied them in scoring, putting up thirteen; going into the half with a five point deficit. The crowd was ready to rally behind the trailing Lions, but it wouldn’t do any good against Salem’s three point rain at the start of the third. The Lions were down 27-47 halfway through the third, it wasn’t looking good for the mighty Lions an upset seemed almost immanent, but London Simonsen picked up his fourth foul and headed out of the game. Soon after Cameron Beckert hit a three to get things going for Payson late in the third heading very important 7-2 run. “I LOVE BJ Ford and Braiden Wright!” said Clint Bateman.

The score was 36-49 for the Skyhawks at the beginning of the fourth, but the Lions wouldn’t give up. Braiden Wright who kept us in the game early would take advantage of a mismatch against Josh Chisholm ,but he wasn’t the only one who helped a surge of points in the fourth. BJ Ford found his stroke at the right time to help close the huge gap in the score. With all of this scoring by the two Payson stars the game was getting within reach of the Lions, and the Salem crowd calmed in shock.  Payson trimmed the lead by eleven with three minutes to go in the game, BJ Ford hit a three then Braiden Wright stole the ball and made a layup when fouled, but missed the free throw. Then almost right after we got a rebound off a Salem miss BJ Ford hit another tough three pointer to tie the game.  56-56 with a 1:10 to go in the ball game then on their next possession, Salem’s Koby Linford was fouled by Braiden Wright and made one of two to give the Skyhawks a slight lead with 58 seconds to go. Kolton Jewett got the board and the Lions headed down the court again, and Braiden Wright was fouled baseline on a tough layup and even though Salem’s crowd was going wild, he made both free throws to give us a slight lead. “We showed them what was up, “said Braiden Wright With thirty seconds left Salem drove the ball down ate twenty seconds off of the clock and called a time out with nine seconds left it would all come down to this the last shot. Salem worked the ball around and gave the ball the Jake Skinner for a game winning three pointer. It hit wide left and Kolton Jewett got the rebound and secured the unbelievable comeback for the Lions. The principals couldn’t hold the students back from rushing the court this was a game of lifetime! “It was a great game!” said Tanner Newbold.

The Boys Basketball team is having an amazing season with 13 wins and just 2 losses, in those two losses they were beat by a combined four points. Their next game is Friday February 4 here at the high school against Maple Mountain, it should be a good game so come out and support our team.
