Two students from Payson High became finalists in the individual event categories at the Utah DECA state conference, Shamara Britos (Retail Merchandising Series) and Landon Serynek (Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series). On the second day of the conference, towards the end, it was also announced that Serynek got sixth place of his category. Getting this placement means that he could possibly have the chance to compete at Nationals in Florida.

Utah’s state DECA competition took place on Feb. 21 and 22. On the first day students that participated (Jessica Hoschouer, Gage Cooper, Alfonso De La Torre, Heidi Palomar, Jocelyn Tucker, Shamara Britos & Landon Serynek) attended the opening session. A part of this was when all of the chapter presidents, including Hoschouer, were invited to participate in “The Parade.”

On the morning of the second day, after two hours of snow induced traffic, Payson arrived to the Salt Palace. As they arrived, finalists were announced.

Palomar’s wish of cheering loud for whoever became a finalist became a reality when both Britos and Serynek were called up.

Katie Kelly, DECA chapter advisor shared with students in a Remind text, “Good Luck to Our Finalists.” Even Kate Searle, who was the instructor before Kelly took over, congratulated the finalists with a Remind text.
