Payson High School Close-Up Club Visits Washington DC

On October 31 ninePayson High students along with Mr. Alexander attended the Close Up program in Washington D.C. In DC students learned how to use the Metro system, to approach a governmental problem, and even met with a representative Chaffetz staff from the great state of Utah.

The participants visited many of memorials and museums, The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the Holocaust Museum to name a few. We also got to visit the White House, the Capital Building, and Williamsburg.

Perhaps the most important and boring activity of the entire program, was the workshops that the students attended. Students from Payson grouped with students from all over the country to discuss topics such as, the drilling in Alaska, immigration policies, and abortion.

We were given a day to tour the capital as a school, we went on the November 3 the day after elections so there were not many congressman there, so we were only able to meet with the staff Rep. Jason Chaffetz which was still a very cool experience. To close this trip we had a dinner followed by a dance.

The students that attended Close learned a lot on this trip. We also learned a lot about how government works and have things are accomplished outside of our own state, and how the government works on a National Level. It’s a trip of a life time, I recommend this trip to everyone! The students that attended this year are Kaleb Bateman, Collin Bateman, Ben Spencer, Tori Adams, tiara McCloud, Liya Whatcott  , Emily Nelson, Trevor Gnieting, and B.J. ford, and we were accompanied by Mr. Ford and Mr. Alexander.
