Submitted by katie.kelly on

The Payson Lions opened the boys’ tennis season with a solid showing at the annual Stephen Wade tournament in St George on March 8 and 9.  Twelve teams participated in the varsity tournament, including several perennial powerhouse schools like Olympus, Desert Hills, and Wasatch.  Day one play determined which players and teams would participate in the three performance groups: gold, silver and bronze.

On day two Payson’s #1 singles player, Jacob Montgomery, defeated Layton to take first in the bronze group, while the Lions #2 singles player, Cole Peterson, beat Wasatch to win the silver group title.   #3 singles Trevor Wilcox dropped Bonneville to win the silver group medal.

In #1 doubles play CJ Ward and Brock Ramos lost to Wasatch in the gold group finals but took home a second place medal in the top group.   Tanner Bollar and James Rowley lost to Wasatch in the finals of the silver group showdown.

Next up for the Lions is a practice match at Provo High on March 12.
