PHS Career Day 2011

Tuesday April 5, Payson High School had a different kind of assembly. Instead of the normal prep rally, we had Career Day. Twenty presenters from the community met with the students of Payson High School to share how their education prepared them for success in the workplace. These presenters ranged from a massage therapist to a helicopter pilot, a banker to highway patrolman. “Overall I thought it was successful,” said Career Day Coordinator, Barbara Arrington.  “Most students in high school do NOT know what they want to do for a career.   Also, there are careers that they don't even know exist.  The more information they have the more options they will see that they have,” said Arrington.

“I liked the chance to see the different kind of careers to help me decide what I’m doing in the future,” said PHS student Audrey Miller. Career Day is important because most high school students don’t know for sure what they are going to do after school. Even if you do know what you want to do it doesn’t hurt to learn a little more about different careers. “We had a great opportunity to go and learn about different types of careers,” said Mercedes John. “Why I thought it was important,” added PHS English teacher Krystal Baker, “Is because the students needs to know how something like learning to write can apply to working in a dental office, or being the chief of police. Learning chemistry can apply to working in the beauty industry, or the food sciences. What the students are learning here in their classes at the high school applies to real life.”

The students of Payson High School enjoyed the chance to see a lot of career options and the community members were able to share their expereinces.  We are looking forward for this experience again next year.
