PHS DECCA Goes to State

Payson High’s DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) were given an opportunity to improve their business skills during the State Competition held February 25 and 26. Six students from Payson able to attend were McKell Tew, Madison Poulson, Saige Bertschi, Erin Robbins, Braiden Muniz, and Will Parson. There were a lot of different kids there from other DECA clubs. There was a variety of over twenty events. They depended on what each person worked well at, such as travel lodging or sports and entertainment.  They were given different scenarios and came up with cost effective solutions.   “We were able to take serious things and make it fun. It was great to meet a bunch of people from other places,” said Robbins. They all took a test to determine what kind of jobs they could do well. Then they were given scenarios based on the results. Payson’s role-playing turned out fantastic when they came up with a way to help gain football players’ fans back after being caught cheating during a game. Their idea was to write a press release and assign each football player to a kid interested in learning how to play.    The school that placed state would be given scholarship opportunities. Unfortunately Pays on High didn’t make it to the top, but they showed a lot of teamwork and still did great. They were even able to go to booths hosted by DECA leader candidates and choose who they wanted to vote for. “It was a lot of fun and we encourage everyone to join DECA next year. It’s a party,” said Tew. For anyone who wants to join, the club is an association of marketing students and is always looking for more hard-working students. It sounds like the competition was a blast, DECA, way to represent our school!
