PHS Journalism Class Reads to Special Needs Students

PHS Journalism class recently visited Special Need kids at PHS as well as two classes at Santaquin Elementary in an effort to spread holiday cheer.    The Special Needs students received a morning full of holiday carols, candy canes and fun as Journalism students read them Christmas-related books.  While there, many of the students reconnected with their younger selves.  Journalism members were seen singing along to the book The Twelve Days of Christmas and really getting involved with the kid-friendly environment. “It was fun to see the kid’s imaginations as we read to them,” said Journalism student Brianne Hiatt.         Afterword, it was the Journalism students that truly felt the benefit from their visit as they were encouraged to continue serving others. “It felt really good to see the kids light up and get excited over us reading a book. It reminded us that it doesn’t take a lot to make somebody’s day,” Journalism student Mercedes John said. Although organizing a food drive or being involved in a Sub for Santa program are both noble causes, Journalism members enjoyed being involved in something that utilized their strengths and interests. “It’s neat when you can serve people using the talents you already have. As a Journalism staff we already have talents in reading, writing, and communicating with people, so talking with and reading to those kids really allowed us to spread the holiday spirit in a way that was important to us. It was cool to see students share their love of literacy and communicating,” said Newspaper advisor Krystal Baker. Through this experience the Journalism students were reminded of the true spirit of the holiday season, and they plan on continuing this kind of attitude all year long.
