On Thursday February 17, the Lion’s Roar Newspaper staff attended the 2011 Deseret News and UVU Review Journalism Conference at Utah Valley University. The writers and editors attended several workshops and seminars. They gained plenty of new knowledge about newspaper layout and writing articles.

The newspaper staff also received three awards for their work. Layout editors SaLisa Kinder and Brianne Hiatt won honorable mention for overall newspaper design, Taylor Cambell won an award for a sport story about the 2010 Superstar Rally and Jakob Johnson won in the category of best news column.

“The newspaper conference is always a good experience and an opportunity for us to get recognized for our hard work, but also to learn how to improve our skills in writing and layout,” said PHS Newspaper Advisor Krystal Baker.

You can already enjoy some of the improvements in this issue of the PHS Lion’s Roar. Two of the new improvements is that you can now look articles up under deseretnews.com and under phs.nebo.edu. You can also enjoy a new layout including a new content table previewing the issue on the front page . Stay tuned for further improvements.
