You might not expect a junior to start varsity over a senior, but at Payson that’s exactly the right move. Easton Smith is a 6’3” junior who is currently starting varsity quarterback this season. Head football coach Jeremy Chapman says he see’s unique potential in Smith

“Easton see’s the game like a coach.” said Chapman.

“He’s a very smart football IQ kid and he has the physical tools. He’s long and athletic and has a pretty good arm. But his biggest, best attribute is his IQ for the game.”

Easton says being a good quarterback just comes naturally to him

“I don’t really think when I play. I honestly just play because I have a love for the game.” Said Smith

Smith not only has a love for the game, he also shows it. Easton has thrown some amazing passes, took some hard hits, and over all played some great ball. Smith, not only having the support from his coach, also has the support from his teammates

“I just feel really confident.” Said teammate Dalton Baker. “If he knows what he’s doing, does his assignments, and reads his reads he can deliver the ball and we can march down the field.”

Not only does team mate Dalton Baker feel confident, so does Sam Reynoso.  Earlier in the season Smith and Reynoso were battling head to head for the starting quarterback position. Though Smith is starting over Reynoso, Sam still has positive things to say about Easton.

“If he is going to start, I’m going to fully support him in it. If that’s what is going to be best for the team, that’s what we’ll do.” Reynoso said.

Easton, not only feeling confident in his team , but also confident in himself said

“It feels really good to start varsity. Last year I was a backup, and now it’s just my time,” said Smith

Payson High is excited to watch Easton and the rest of the team lead us to victory! Good luck this season boys! Play hard and take some names.
