PHS Latinos in Action Wins Big

Payson High School’s Latinos in Action club and 41 other schools attended the LIA conference on March 17 at the UVU. Our LIA club took first in a competition against 27 high schools of coming up with a business proposal on how they would improve student’s transition between high school to college.

Payson’s plan was to get advisors who would take care of Latino students and help them plan for college.  Whereas regular school counselors have the whole student body, these advisors would have five to ten specific students who they are in charge of to help the students more specifically.  They received a $1000 check from Zion’s Bank to put their plan into action.  On top of that, receiving a LIA scholarship was Payson’s own Ramiro Salazar.  They expect to attend the conference again next year and hope to succeed again.

Overall our LIA club did an amazing job.  “It was great.  I think we did well; we did our best to represent Payson High.  We had a good time and we hope to do it again next year,” said Ramiro Salazar.  The LIA club also really appreciates the efforts of Mr. Cardenas and Mrs. Gillie and for their help with the LIA club.  So hats off to our LIA club and way to represent!
