PHS Spring Play: Little Shop of Horrors

This year’s musical was Little Shop of Horrors. The cast did a great job being hobos, drunks, semi-sadists and a man-eating plant. “It’s really fun to be a hobo,” said Shaunese, one of the hobos.  For those of you who didn’t see the musical, you missed a creepy performance about a plant taking over the world, and Justin Craig being playing a drunk. “It’s fun to experience something I’ll never experience and it’s fun to make people laugh,” said Justin Craig.  Here is a little overview for those that missed it.

The play starts at 1313 Skid Row at Mushnik’s Flower Shop.  Seymour (Aaron Ethridge) buys an unidentified species of flytrap for $1.95. He finds out to make it grow he has to feed it blood.  “I’m always the nerd,” says Aaron Ethridge about being Seymour.  The plant grows and starts talking to Seymour, telling him that if he feeds it he will have everything his heart desires: fame, fortune, and Audrey (played by Meg Garret).

Seymour, to feed the plant, kills the semi-sadist dentist (Curtis Hindes).  Mr. Mushnik (Aaron Arnold) gets a call from the police saying they found one of his bags at the dentist’s house. He starts to investigate and notices that Seymour has been acting strange; he confronts Seymour and gets tricked into getting eaten by the plant as well.  Filled with regret, Seymour argues with himself about killing the plant, when he is offered contracts to display the plant over the world; the plant promises too much for Seymour to resist.  He signs the contracts and tells the plant it will never be hungry again.  But never make a deal with a man-eating plant.

He asks Audrey if she would still like him if he wasn’t famous anymore, she says she would still love him.  He then decides to kill the plant.  He goes to get some meat from the store to keep the plant healthy for one more day.  When he leaves Audrey comes back still worrying about Seymour, the plant then asks her to water it; I think you can guess what it really wants, she does and tries to eat her.  Seymour saves her, but is too late and she dies in his arms after telling him to feed her to the plant so he can become famous.  In a moment of irony or poetic justice he feeds her to the plant, and it still wants more to eat. Seymour snaps and tries to kill the plant, he jumps in it so he can chop it up from the inside.  With machete in hand he jumps in the plant, but the plant is to strong and it eats him.  The play ends with the plant taking over the world, and eating the audience. “It’s the best feeling in the world to hear the applause and know it’s for you,” said Meg Garret.

The play was very well done; the lighting dramatically changed the mood of each scene. The songs were also well done.  The talent of each cast member is amazing, the voices of the cast members changed to fit their characters.  On the Friday performance the music tracks didn’t work as smoothly as they could have, the cast had to improve a lot and I think it was the funniest night and showed that they understood the play enough to make up stuff on the spot.  “I’m amazed by the creativity of the cast,” said Mrs. Morgan, the choir teacher.
