PHS Wrestling On the Prowl for the State Championship

Payson High wrestling is once again on the prowl for the state championship this year. With thirty driven boys on the team, four of them belonging to the Loveless family, there’s no doubt that we have a good chance at taking state.

The Payson High Wrestling team is constantly practicing to make their self’s better, stronger and faster. On January 7 we had four of our best wrestlers wrestle at the UVU all-star match. Derek Johnson, Riley Loveless, Hagen Loveless and Josh Jensen were all selected to represent Payson High School. With Riley and Josh both bringing home wins, and Derek and Hagen wrestling with heart and desire, Payson high was represented well.

“Wrestling in the All-star duels was a great opportunity. It was cool to wrestle against the best in the state in front of a huge crowd.”  Josh Jensen said.

With all of the strong wrestlers that we have, it’s no shock that the team is succeeding! So far this year the team has won all of their duels beating, Salem, Carbon, Spanish fork, Juab, Richfield and North Sanpete. We have also hit many tournaments taking first in the winter classic, fifth in the tournament of champions, fourth in the Viewmont tournament, and those are just a few of the high lights of this season!

“The kids have been wrestling tough. It’s getting to be the hard part of the season but the boys are still working really hard and wrestling really well. We have really good senior leadership and that should help us finish strong and bring home the state championship.” said Head Coach Jeb Clark.

With sectionals and state coming up the boys are currently working hard to make sure we seal the win! With agonizing practices, duels every Thursday and tournaments almost every weekend, the boys are undoubtedly getting the practice in that they need.

“Hard. Our practices are always hard. But they are fun at the same time because you never know what Jeb has in store for us,” said teammate Jamison Judd.

As wrestling season comes to a close, don’t forget to go out and support your team! The divisional tournament will be held on the 7 and 8 of February at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield with state the next weekend in Salt Lake at the Maverick Center. Come out and support your mighty wrestlers!
