PHS Wrestling Takes Region

This year PHS wrestling has had an amazing season! The Lions have brought a lot of experience and depth to the mat; with the 4 returning state champions they are working to repeat as 4A state champions. While wrestling in one of the toughest regions in 4A Payson will continue to dominate in region 8. Wrestling in the Lions’ Den, Payson beat Maple Mountain by a whopping 53 points with a final score 59, Payson, 6, Maple Mt.  CJ Ford used two take downs and an escape to take down Maple Mt.’s Brennan Hyatt. Payson also used pins from Michael Don Cole, Tyson Wilson, Colton Cannon, Broden Parkin, and Mitch Brown. Payson has had huge contributions from up and coming freshman KK Loveless, and Jed Mellen. During the victory, the Lion’s only gave up one pin, but then roared back winning 11 straight matches. The Rocky Mountain Rumble was another heated contest for the Lion’s. Losing by six the Lions still dominated with the most pins. Coach Loveless praised the work of his team saying “We placed a lot of kids, 9 out of 12; we also placed two other wrestlers.” Senior night was an amazing experience at PHS, as the whipped their rivals Salem Hills. Winning 58-15 the Lions showed their dominance over the Sky Hawks. Payson used five pins from seniors to roll to victory against Salem. The Lions finished off their third undefeated region season. The Lions are dominating the wrestling scene in 2010. They are currently ranked number 1 in the class 4A, and tops in the state of Utah. With preparing for region and state tournaments the Lion’s have the belief that they still have great shot of a repeat of last season. When we asked senior Chris Robbins about how his experience was going on this hard working team he said, “I love it, I have a lot of friends that are on the team. I learned a lot, worked hard, had fun, and it is a great sport. You can pretty much rip someone’s head off and not get in trouble for it. Even though it’s one of the toughest things I have ever done, it was an awesome experience.” Great job to all wrestlers through the season thus far! Keep up the good work Lions!
