Redefining College during College Application Week

Submitted by kate.searle on

The week of Nov. 6-10 is College Application Week at Payson High School, with a special College and Financial Aid Night on Nov. 8. Representatives from ALC, West Point Academy, Regents Scholarship, military, Sterling Scholar, SOMOS, UESP, Daniels Fund, DevPoint coding school, and colleges and universities around the state will be present to answer any questions you might have.  Counselors will also be in the computer lab that night to help parents and students apply for federal financial aid, FAFSA.

The theme this year is “Redefining College”.  Many students have a fixed mindset of what college is, but there are many non-traditional ways of getting further education after high school.  Many throughout the nation are using the term “Higher Education Day” versus “College Day” to dissolve preconceived notions that everyone has to go to “college”. Counselors at PHS hope that the theme “Redefining College” will open students’ eyes to the many opportunities available to them.

Many colleges and universities will allow you to apply at school during College Application Week for free.  Schools such as SUU, Snow College, and Dixie State all let you apply for free and UVU is also free, as long as you’re already enrolled in Concurrent Enrollment.

The kick off assembly for College Week will be on Nov. 7.  On Nov. 7 and 8 students will complete college applications.  Nov. 8 is the College and Financial Aid Night. You’ll want to come because, not only will colleges be there, but Waffle Love and the Taco Truck will be cooking up some delicious food.

Junior high students are also invited to attend College and Financial Aid Night. Studies show the younger a student is introduced to the possibility of higher education the more likely they will be to set and make higher education goals.  Bring your family, grab a punch card to receive a dollar off at the food trucks, and come redefine your vision of college.
