Ultra-Marathon runner and Payson High graduate, Jarom Thurston, spoke to the students of PHS September 27 as part of the Windows on the Workplace program.

Thurston, a 1994 graduate of Payson, didn’t run while in high school. In fact he didn’t like to run at all and could barely even run a mile he said. It wasn’t until his brother started to train that he found his motivation.

“I thought if my younger brother can do it, I better see if I can do it too!” said Thurston.

Regularly running 125 – 135 mile marathons, Thurston said his most memorable races have been the Death Valley Ultra-Marathon and the Brazil 135. Thurston also acts at the US Athlete Ambassador for the Brazil 135.

Thurston’s message was of dedication and achieving goals, and not stopping after reaching the first milestone. After finishing his first race he thought he was done.

“I met my goal and that’s all I wanted to do,” said Thurston.

But having experienced the thrill of achievement he pushed himself to continue, through tired muscles, throwing up along the trail and blisters.

The message of pushing through roadblocks and hardships to achieve greatness carries over to pursuit of a worthwhile career, and is why Thurston was chosen to speak at Windows on the Workplace.

“Thurston demonstrates a mindset and skills so necessary in any career today like persistence, dedication, being able to see the big picture and to work with a goal in mind,” said Windows on the Workplace Coordinator, Barbara Arrington.
