Where did the Shamrock come from?

Submitted by kate.searle on

Not many of us know where the shamrock really came from. Most of us know it is the big symbol for St. Patrick’s Day, and we see it everywhere we go in the month of March. It has been long forgotten by the public where the four leaf clover legend originated from.

There is a legend from long ago that it is actually has religious meaning. A very well-known bishop named St. Patrick lived back in the time of the druids back in Ireland. One day a group of his followers were struggling to understand the meaning of the Holy Trinity, so the famous bishop picked a clover up and used the three leafs to show that God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit were three separate beings, but connected as one. It also stands for hope, faith and love. Then sometimes God adds another extra leaf for luck.

From then on the group showed other believers this concept and it carried on for generations. Over the years it has molded and changed into what we know it as today, a lucky charm, a symbol of the holiday dedicated to St. Patrick. So when you go throughout March celebrating St. Patty’s Day, you can remember the legend of the shamrock.
