“SEEKING NEW CARETAKER. Must be responsible, adaptable, and willing to perform emergency dental surgery on a fog giant,” reads the teaser flyer on the back of Brandon Mull’s “Fablehaven,” the book that got me reading like a madman and loving it.

Why? Partly because reading relieved me and gave my life purpose. It was my passion clear back then. Still is.

CTE Month highlights

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month happens every February and is used to advertise what classes are available to sophomores and juniors as they make schedules for the next school year. Head CTE coordinator Brian Blake said, “CTE month is an entire month because there are so many great skills and activities that students have access to gain.” Some of the feature events of CTE Month are the Region Culinary Arts competition FCCLA competes in, Sweethearts week and dance put on by FFA, and the state DECA competition.

Lions of the Week

Two students were selected to be "Lions of the Week" on Friday, March 1st. The students chosen were Casandra John and Wyatt Hone. Both were chosen for excellence in the fields they pursue. The "Lions of the Week" were announced during a broadcast of The Pride, with Principal RaShel Shepherd as the presenter. 

The first student selected was Wyatt Hone, who represented our school's wrestling team. Shepherd commented, "Wyatt's been a three time state placer, and has won second place twice. He's also a multi-sport athlete. He plays baseball, and he's amazing at academics."

Payson DECA members become finalists at state competition & one places sixth in the state

Two students from Payson High became finalists in the individual event categories at the Utah DECA state conference, Shamara Britos (Retail Merchandising Series) and Landon Serynek (Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series). On the second day of the conference, towards the end, it was also announced that Serynek got sixth place of his category. Getting this placement means that he could possibly have the chance to compete at Nationals in Florida.

Payson High Wrestling Team Wins State Championship

We want to wish a big congratulations to our wrestling team for bringing home the 4A State Wrestling Championship. It was a true team win. 

1st Place: Tyson Carter; 2nd Place: Cole Jensen, Deagan Palmer, Wyatt Hone, Tucker Naccarrato,and McCoy Cook; 3rd Place: Brock Loveless and Tyler Knapp; 4th Place: Jorge Sanchez; 5th Place: Braxton Monroe

Payson High School Celebrates Spirit Week

Feb. 4th- 8th was the famous Spirit Week here at Payson High School. The theme was Nintendo and for each day, the students dressed up in “Wii” sports and resort wear, Yoshi green, and flannel representing Moo Moo Meadows from Mario Kart Wii. Everyday at lunch, students went into the main gym to play Super Smash Bros., dodgeball and volleyball. Competition was as intense as it would be at a sports event, and the students spent the week reaching for first place in all the games to earn points for their grade.

Boys Soccer Open Gyms

If you’re interested in joining the boys soccer team this upcoming spring, don’t forget to go to the open gyms before tryouts. Tryouts will be held February 25th (at PHS) from 6pm-8pm and February 26th (at the ALC) from 6pm-8pm.

Lifetime Activities classes go snowshoeing

Payson High has several Physical Education classes ranging from Weight Lifting to Lifetime Activities. Lifetime Activities classes usually participate in fun activities all throughout the year and recently, equipped with their coats and gloves, went snowshoeing up Payson Canyon. Snowshoeing is a low-impact sport that's great for recuperation or non-impact strength building. Michelle Garcia, one of the students that participated, said, "Snowshoeing gets our heart rate up by walking around the snowy canyon.

College Day for Juniors

College Day is approaching, and will be for all Juniors on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019. All Juniors are encouraged to attend because they will have the opportunity to learn more information about the colleges they are interested in. The colleges that will be presenting are Utah State, Weber State, LDS Business College, University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, Westminster College, Utah Valley University, Brigham Young University, BYU-I, Snow College, Southern Utah University, Dixie, Colorado Mesa, and  MTECH.
