PHS Drill Placed 2nd in Region

On Saturday, January 16th, the Paysetters took a trip to 3A Region. The most important Drill competition of the season.

“Region was nerve wracking and exciting all at once. I was just ready to take the floor and leave everything out there,” Hannah Marin said.

Sweat, desire and dedication are just a few of the attributes you have to have to be on the Payson High basketball team. One dream, one team, one desire, to get that state championship trophy. All of the boys are extremely dedicated, we can see that when they step on the court, but who is that one player that stands out? That player that even at the worst times still seems to give it his all and fight until the very end? That player that always seems to have a positive attitude on, and off the court.

PHS Wrestling On the Prowl for the State Championship

Payson High wrestling is once again on the prowl for the state championship this year. With thirty driven boys on the team, four of them belonging to the Loveless family, there’s no doubt that we have a good chance at taking state.

Indoor Track and Field: Carrying on the Legacy

These past weeks have been great for the indoor track team. The team has already competed in two meets and many athletes have set new PRs (personal records), while a few have placed very highly.

Lady Lions: Shooting for Glory

The Lady Lions had their first region game on January 14 against Juab. They ended up winning 45-49 with a little help from Makenzie Simons who was making shots left and right. This leaves the Lions with a season record of 1-0 so far. Prior to the region games, they were 3-9.

                The team has many strengths among the athletes. Co-captain Lauren Hazelet said that it was impossible to narrow down exactly who the most contributing player is.

Boys Declared Superior Gender of PHS Gender Wars

On January 17, the boys and the girls of Payson High faced off in a heated battle for the undisputed title of the best gender in the school. Though the battle was close the whole time, the boys pulled off a win in the last competition, earning 50 points for winning the relay race.

Eloise Bridges Receives 2013 -2014 PHS Crystal Apple Award

English teacher Eloise Bridges is the recipient of the 2013 -2014 Payson High School Crystal Apple Award. Bridges has taught at PHS for 23 years, and currently teaches Business English, and Concurrent Enrollment, College Writing courses. Bridges recently took on an 8th English course, leaving her with no preparation hours during her work day. Bridges as a reputation as a tough teacher at PHS, but is much loved by her students.

PHS Honor Society Serves at Food and Care Coalition

The National Honor Society served at the Food and Care Coalition on December 5th. NHS members helped prepare and serve the food for the homeless. The PHS Trouveres joined the National Honor Society and performed as the food was being served.

While NHS serves those less fortunate all year, Mrs. Benson thinks that it is especially important during the holiday season.

 

“That’s what the holidays are all about: sharing what we have with others. That’s how we remember the meaning of the season, “said Mrs. Benson.

Girls Basketball: Taking a Shot to Make the Shot

The Girls’ Basketball team has been practicing hard from 3 to 5 every day, and is ready for their first game on November 26 – a home game against Cottonwood. 

                There are technically 16 gals on the team right now, though three of them have been injured recently. Those three couldn’t try out with the rest and will have a separate tryout to see if they’ve made the team.  So we’ll see if Coach Hiatt will let them play.
