Six juniors from the Nebo School District, including three from PHS, organized a  HOBY community leadership workshop for 54 Freshmen on Saturday, November 13 at BYU. The entire workshop was totally run by six juniors of the district:  Audrey Miller, Jasmin Moyano, and Mercedes John as an assistant from the PHS and Alex Minson, Cason Acor, Lisie Dixon, Matt Russell.

At the workshop there were many different activities like a service project and talks by speakers from the community planned. The main speaker was Matt Hinton. They also participated in a service project for women in Africa called “Africa Is Life Changing”. The service project involves two women who go to Africa twice a year and bring plastic bags, cut them into strings, and the African women use those strings to make bags or purses and then they sell them at the market and provide their families with the profit.

One bag sells for 10$ in the USA and it pays for the food of a mom and 3 children for 2 weeks. To help them, the participants got plastic shopping bags and cut them in strings for the women to take them to Africa. “Our trash is their treasure,” said Audrey. They also played games and had a questioning time with the panel speaker.

They learned how to get involved and HOBY offers great opportunities like scholarships.

“Seeing kids understanding how important leaders are and seeing them cheering for HOBY was an awesome experience and I’m proud of being part of it. That paid back for the work of organizing it,” said Miller.

This school years conference will be hold on May 11-14 in Aspen Grove. The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) is an organization dedicated to training and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow. Its mission is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower youth to achieve their highest potential.
