This year Payson High’s musical was The Sound of Music. Set in the beginning of the Nazi movement into Austria, it’s about a woman who finds her place in a family and helps them reunite through music.

The musical opened with singing nuns.   They sang very well and gave the feel of a church choir very well.  Next Maria, played by Meg Garret, made her appearance singing, The Sound of Music song in the aisles.  The song was very well sung, and conveyed the feeling of her character’s love for music.  A Few of My Favorite Things was sung with a high level of emotion. Mother Abbess, played by Melissa Green, and Maria showed the personality of their characters very well in this song and thought the play.

After this song Mother Abbess sends Maria to the Von Trapp family to be their governess.  She finds that the children don’t know anything about music because their mother was into music and when she passed away their father Captain Georg Von Trapp, played by Brayden Hansen, stopped having music in the house. She decides to teach them to sing as well as their other studies.  She takes care of the children while Georg is away as a captain of a navy ship.  When he returns he learns that his children can sing and he is grateful to have music in the house again.

The differences between Pro-Nazis and Pro-Austrian starts to become more evident at this part of the play foreshadowing the Nazi invasion. He is engaged to Elsa Scraeder, played by Emilie Birkeland, but they break it off because she is Pro-Nazi while Georg is against them.  Georg and Maria then accept they have been falling in love for a while and get married.

When they get back from their honeymoon the Nazis demand that Georg joins their navy.  He decides he must run away with their family, and finds the perfect time in a music contest.  His children are already entered so he adds himself and Maria.  After their performance they run away and hide in the Abbey were Maria was originally.  The Nazis follow and demand to search the grounds; they look for the family and almost find them until Rolfe, played by Taylor Roberson, who liked Liesel, played by Jazmin Moyanno, the oldest daughter before he became a Nazi, leads the Nazis away from the family.  The Von Trapp family then decides to run away across the mountains into Switzerland, ending the play.

The cast was well selected and fit their parts well.  The leads did a great job of switching moods between the scenes.  “The cast has dedicated so many hours to bringing this product to the school they are a great group of students and our younger cast members have been super,” said play director Mr.  Alred.  The musical transitioned smoothly through the plot, having time gaps that are not noticeable, by covering them up with other scenes.   There were a few technical problems but they didn’t detract too much from the performance.  Overall it was a very good play with a great cast.
