On December 9, Payson High’s basketball team took on the Salem Hills Skyhawks our biggest rival as of late. Payson beat Salem Hills 60-40 a huge difference from last year’s memorable 20 point comeback.  Led by senior captains Clint Bateman and Tanner Newbold; scoring 33 points between the two starting guards, Clint with 11 points and eight assists and Tanner with 22 points and five three pointers.

Payson starting out hot got out to a huge 20 to 2 point lead at the end of the first quarter.  Looking to put the game out of reach by the second quarter, but the Skyhawks found their offense, outscoring our Lions 13-11 in the second quarter.  Heading to the locker room the Lions had a 31 to 15 lead.

In the third quarter the Lions put the game out of reach, by hitting three’s as if they were layups.  Tanner, Clint, and Cade Jensen hitting one a piece, along with 10 points from junior Kaleb Wright put the game out of reach for the Lions.  In the end of the third quarter the Lions lead was 51-29.

To start the fourth quarter the Lions capped off their win by a three by Tanner Newbold.  The student section was going crazy chanting “Lander, Lander, Lander!”  Over and over and when Coach Lunt looked down the bench and called on the junior big man to check in, the student section went crazy!

“It was the loudest I heard all game, and I was in the birds nest,” Said sophomore manager Braiden Ostler.

“I love Payson High!  We have the best fans in the whole state!”  Said an excited Lander Crook.

Skyler Rowley 8 points, Jacob Humpherys 2 points, Brody Adams 2 points, Kade Jensen 5 points.
