The Payson High School Social Studies Department recently held an essay contest in conjunction with President’s Day entitled: Who was or is the greatest American? The purpose of the contest was to generate increased awareness in American history, and showcase good writing. Winning essays topics included such American greats as Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson.

First place was awarded to Audrey Miller for her essay on Martin Luther King Jr., second place went to Keaton Evans, third place to Grace Heaps, and honorable mentions were awarded to: Taylor Brown, Alena Johnson and Elizabeth Turner.

Many well written essays were submitted to the contest, and the Social Studies Department hopes to make both the contest, and the honoring of great lives, a tradition at Payson High.

“It is important for students to learn about great Americans because they can learn from their failures, successes, and the achievement of greatness, and hopefully achieve greatness in our own lives,” said PHS Social Studies Department Chair Stan Robbins.
