PHS HOSA Club Disects Cow Hearts

Recently, the HOSA club got down and dirty with real cow hearts. With scalpels in hand, HOSA members sliced up the two fresh (and still slightly warm) hearts and explored each valve, ventricle, artery, and vein. Members learned about the anatomy of the heart and the path of blood flow in a hands-on experience; they built upon the knowledge they have previously gained in the classroom.                 Dissecting cow hearts was both educational and interesting; members enjoyed becoming involved. “It was really cool to see hearts that big up close. The hands-on experience made learning much easier,” Ashley Byington said. “Dissecting cow hearts was a blast! It was really neat to see all the HOSA members getting involved and learning so many cool, new things about the heart,” HOSA club Historian, Shelby Judd, related.                 HOSA is a club that provides students an opportunity to learn more about the medical field. Members have fun and learn more about healthcare in the process. HOSA Advisor, Shad Stevens, was excited about this opportunity for his students, “This activity took learning from the textbooks to the hands of the students to better understand the workings of the body.”
