“When the chips are down, we rise to the challenge,” said Coach Rockwood.

This one simple statement effectively sums up Payson High’s own Cross Country team. Victorious in regions, the team came back with the first place cup. Nick Hindes, Jordan Bailey, and Dakota Lange made it into the top 10 runners. Coming in close at 11th was Dallin Lowe. Ariane Keele represented the girls well, with 5th place. The regions meet was held October 9th at Spanish Fork.

One of the highlights of the event was Dakota Lange’s run. Even though he came in 2nd, it is widely accepted that he deserved to win. There was some question as to whether the other runner (who did in fact take 1st) won 1st place honestly. Dakota told officials that he would rather take 2nd than win by a technicality. Dakota did not only show great personal integrity in this moment, he proved to Payson and to the opposing teams that our Cross Country team has good character.

Well done Dakota, you done done us proud!

The state tournament was held October 17th at Sugarhouse Park. Cross Country placed 13th.

“We are closing in on our goal of being the state champions,” said Coach Rockwood, “We are looking forward to next year, and we want more people to join and be a part of that [Payson’s legacy].”
