Interview with New PHS English Teacher Ms. Connelly By Jamie Finch
Q: What is your full given name?
A: “Amy Camille Connelly, but my students can’t call me Amy.”
Q: Where are you from?
A: “I spent most of my life in Illinois, but I moved to Salem in high school and lived on a farm. I currently live in Provo.”
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: “I have a cocker spaniel named Lady. She looks like she’s from Lady and the Tramp.”
Q: What are you passionate about?
A: “Obviously, I love to read and write. I sang in choir and I played volleyball and soccer at Salem Hills. I also really love swimming.”
Q: What influenced you to become a high school English teacher?
A: “I originally went to BYU to minor in music, but I took a literature class and loved it. My teacher told me I should go into teaching because I have a way of making boring things exciting.”
Q: Have you always wanted to be a teacher?
A: “Both of my parents are teachers, so I resisted the career at first. I’m happy I chose it in the end, though.”
Q: Have you been outside of the country? If so, did you eat anything weird?
A: “I studied abroad for three months in London, England. While I was there, I took classes, went to art museums, and worked on my family history. I refused to try haggis, but fell in love with British chocolate (specifically Cadbury Chocolate).”
Q: What’s the most exciting thing you’ve experienced?
A: “I made it into Ireland without a passport. I took a ferry from Wales to Ireland and forgot to bring my passport with me. It was my birthday and I was the last person, so the man just let me go. It was scary, though, because I didn’t know if I’d be able to get out. Luckily, they didn’t check for passports on the way home.”
Q: If your students were to bribe you, what should they use?
A: “Chocolate! No hesitation there.”
Q: What’s the strangest thing you’ve experienced at PHS thus far?
A: “A cat walked into my classroom. I chased it out, and it curled up by the PHS sign out front. I took a picture because it looked by a baby lion.”
Q: If you could be anyone for a week, who would you be?
A: “J.K. Rowling. I love what she’s done, it’s remarkable. She was a single mom on welfare, and had to provide for her family through writing. The fact that she wrote the first chapter of the Harry Potter series on a napkin amazes me.”
Q: You and I are on a road trip! What car are we in, and where are we going?
A: “I’ve always wanted a Mini Coupe with a British flag on the hood. We would be traveling to California to the beach because I love humidity.”
Q: What is your biggest fear?
A: “I watch a bunch of crime shows, and I’m seriously scared of getting murdered!”
Q: What is your favorite book? Why?
A: “My favorite book is Jane Eyre. I soaked it up like a sponge.”
Q: What’s your favorite kind of music?
A: “I like Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spector. I don’t know what kind of music that’s classified as, though.”
Q: Is there an interesting fact about you that isn’t normally brought up?
A: “I snorted a gummy bear out of my nose! I got it out by blowing my nose in a tissue.”
