Students wanting more opportunities to dance

Submitted by kate.searle on

Social Dance is taught by Mrs. McClellan at Payson High and the class has rocketed in popularity. Students are often showing great love for not only the class but the teacher as well. They recently performed during parent teacher conference, the Paris Coleman Benefit Talent Show, and the PHS Dance Department Showcase but students are thirsty for more.

They were very excited to have so many opportunities to show off their social dance skills. However, Mrs. McClellan stated, “Still having a thirst to perform they have asked if we can begin a ballroom team/company.” The request for more opportunities for the dance classes has widely spread and a number of students who take Social Dance 1 love it so much they take it several times. Unfortunately, PHS doesn’t offer a Social Dance 2...yet.  Many students are hoping their dream to get a ballroom team/company comes true as well.

It is a common request from students to be able to perform more. The current students love dancing and love to show it! There aren’t as many opportunities for them to perform as the drill team or any of our sports teams and they are craving for performance time. They are eager for more challenges in their dancing and want to prove how great Social Dance really is.

Student Michelle Rushton says, “We want more guys to come! We want it to be big enough for an advanced class.” Student Briton Wilson stated, “More boys should take it as a P.E. credit because it’s way more fun.”

Mrs. McClellan's former student Melanie Ward put together an early morning group named Social Too. They meet early in the morning at 6:30am to rehearse and to learn more, strengthen their talents and be able to perform more often with their newly learned skills. All of these students have already taken Social Dance 1, some have even taken it up to four times.

The current class is getting ready to perform at the PHS Dance Department Showcase, which will be held on May 19 at 7:00pm at Payson High. Make sure to come and support your dancing lions!
