Black History Month
Dr. Carter G. Woodson

“Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country’s history” (Jonathan Franklin).

Payson High School joins the rest of the nation in celebrating Black History Month. We recognize that the lives, stories, and contributions of African Americans are inseparably intertwined into the tapestry of American history. As it has been said, “There is no American history without African American history” (Sara Clarke Kaplan). Black History Month grew out of the work of Harvard-trained historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who designated a Black History Week in 1926 (see his photo in this post). In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month and called upon us to  “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Let us live up to the call of President Ford and the vision of Dr. Woodson.
