Congratulations to this year’s Sterling Scholars for all they’ve put forth to achieve this award. This year’s Sterling Scholars include: James Lopez, Science; Jazmin Moyano, Dance; Missy Jensen, English; Adam Anderson, Music; Jake Allinson, Speech/Drama ; Melissa Green, Social Science; Maria Farias, Trade/Technical Education; Janessa Reynoso, Computer Technology; Erin Robbins, Business Marketing; Emily Walker, Foreign Language; Savannah Davies, Family & Consumer Sciences; Kadin Farnsworth, Math; and Melissa Myers for Visual Arts.

What made some of this year’s Sterling Scholars want to apply for this award? “My sister won Sterling Scholar for Speech and Drama, so I wanted to go for it too.” Says Jake Allinson. According to Jazmin Moyano she says “I’ve wanted to be Sterling Scholar for dance since my sophomore year.” Knowing this, Jazmin has had plenty of time to prepare. If you are a junior or a sophomore thinking of applying your senior year, listen up to some great advice provided by this year’s sterling scholars. 1. “Never doubt what you are capable of!” Says Maria Farias. “2. A quote that Kadin Farnsworth uses to help motivate him is, “If you can solve your problems, what’s the use of worrying and if you cannot solve them, what is the need of it?”-By Shanta Diva. 3. “Apply for more than one subject, it makes your chances go up.” Says Melissa Myers. 4. “Work hard, don’t ever give up, have fun, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.” Erin Robbins. 5. “Make sure you know as much as you can about your subject, in your interview they will pretty much as you anything!” Says Emily Walker.

The Sterling Scholar program was created to publicly recognize outstanding seniors who have excelled in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and those who have excelled academically. Many colleges and universities such as BYU, Dixie, U of U, Snow, UVU, and many others throughout the state offer financial aid after receiving this award. Depending on the college or university, the amount of tuition paid for depends on the level they have won ranging from high school to state level. However, just winning on the high school level may win you up to one year of college paid! Just think, that’s one year less to stress about how you’re going to pay for college.
