Payson Sterling Scholars make history in 2016

Submitted by kate.searle on

On Tuesday, March 10, three of Payson High’s finest made a mark on Payson. Sterling Scholars Caleb Peterson, Garth Talbot, and Shelby Bulkley became the first Payson students in years to make it to the finals round in the Sterling Scholar competition. These three finals candidates have worked hard to get to the finals. The process of becoming a sterling scholar starts by them filling out an application(s) at their school. Departments then interview the candidates.

After Department heads meet together, the school picks a candidate in each of the 14 categories to represent the school. Then the scholars put together an electronic portfolio. In it, they write a personal biography, and provide information about their academics, community service performed, and other important information. These are sent to a committee who reads and judges all the region submissions. Candidates are judged on their leadership skills, academics, community service, and what they’ve done in that category. They also pay attention to what they’re doing in their category and what they plan to do in the future. These semifinalist candidates are interviewed. After interviews if they are selected as finalists they then move on to the finals interviews. Following these interviews a large ceremony is held at the LDS conference center where a winner is announced for each category. There are 15 finalists in each category. Our Payson Sterling Scholars really worked hard!

Mrs. Lotz who has been with the Sterling Scholars through this whole process says “We did really well this year. Last year we had seven at semifinals and no one made it to finals. So the fact that we had three in the finals this year is a pretty big deal. The program is really growing. We had great scholars and they presented themselves well and I have high hopes for next year. Those that made it to finals were much more prepared and they were incredible scholars and leaders. They are strong in their category and involved in community service. It’s been years since we’ve had anyone go to finals. We’re really improving and growing. Next year I hope to continue this trend. Anybody that is a junior that wants to be a sterling scholar needs to be aware that Sterling Scholars possess strong leadership traits, are strong in their category, and have strong academics. Also, community service is one of the most important parts about being a Sterling Scholar. A Sterling Scholar sees a need in the community, takes initiative to do something about it and takes the lead to make a difference. To be a Sterling Scholar, take the initiative to do something. Be the leader not the follower.”
