The Grand America Hotel Field Trip Recap

Submitted by kate.searle on

On April 21st Culinary Arts, Art, and Architecture students took a tour of The Grand America Hotel up in Salt Lake City then had an etiquette dinner at La Caille Restaurant in Sandy to experience and further educate on real life scenarios and opportunities. Their first stop was The Grand America Hotel where a tour was given in the public areas and some back-of-house areas like the laundry and shipment areas as well as residential and regular rooms. Things like a million dollar chandelier and paintings from the 17th century were showcased and details like the perimeter of the building was made entirely out of granite imported from Italy were disclosed throughout the visit. Next was a walk to the tracks and had a quick ride to City Creek which featured a quick stop at The Chocolate Factory. The walk continued through a corner of Temple Square and up to the bus which then transported to La Caille, an 18th century rural France styled restaurant. Upon the arrival at the restaurant 20 minutes were granted to wander around it’s grand pavilion and gardens. Being an etiquette dinner, there was a five course meal including escargot, sorbet, salad, chicken, and an ice cream crepe (vegetarian entree was offered as well). All accompanied with the best manners ever seen. After the meal students were driven back to the school. Overall the trip was exciting and enlightening. It spotlighted how a lot of the career fields overlap with each other in many ways. The Grand America Field Trip is held every year for culinary, art and architecture students. It’s an experience not to miss out on and an opportunity to take advantage of. If you’re interested at all then it’s encouraged that you take these classes and attend next year.
