Behind the PHS Talent Show 2012

To celebrate Payson High School’s 100th year anniversary students were entertained by the talents presented by their friends and fellow peers at the annual student Talent Show. While it is easy to appreciate the performances we view, sometimes we don’t recognize the ingenuity, hard work, and deeper personal  significance our classmates use to plan and practice for the show. These are the stories behind a few of the performances.

Eric Shelley, sophomore boy who sang “Shake it Off” by Florence the Machine, reveals the big secret to preparing for a performance.

“Practice, practice, and more practice,” said Eric. Singing isn’t an easy thing, especially in front of an audience, and long hours of learning lyrics and practicing hitting those high and low notes are essential to anyone looking to perform their best. The song choice was very random said Eric, calling it a “spontaneous” pick. Something you might not know though is that Eric worked closely with Chase Healey (another talent show performer) and the two friends helped each other with their performances.

Chase Healey, who performed a stunning vocal solo accompanied by Olivia Matta on the piano, says she ran through her song a million times and made sure to exercise her voice on a regular basis. Chase is no stranger to performing on stage, and loves the feeling.

“I try my hardest to show emotion when I am singing on stage because it is one thing to sing with emotion it’s another thing to show it,” Chase said. Chase must be doing something right, because the audience could sure feel the emotion. Chase really appreciated the help of Eric and Olivia who practiced with her and gave her feedback.

Brandon Peterson also sang for the talent show, but a little differently than Eric and Chase. Brandon chose a two part song to perform with a puppet and his skills of ventriloquism! Brandon has always been a big fan of magic, practicing tricks from books, and one day he found a passage on ventriloquism and couldn’t help but be fascinated. Being a fan of Jeff Dunham, Brandon knew he had to do a ventriloquism act for his talent so he found a puppet he liked on EBay, made his purchase and commenced to practice. I think you’ll agree the results of his efforts are quite amazing!

Without a doubt students were shown some pretty amazing talent this year at PHS, and though we couldn’t cover all of the performances, The Lion’s Roar hopes you enjoyed this behind the scenes cover of this year’s 2012, 100th year anniversary talent show!
