Friday August 25, Payson’s Student Council put on an assembly that introduced the 2017-2018 theme, got the students excited for the upcoming events and pinned each grade against each other with head-to-head competitions. From the very beginning the students were making noise, cheering, laughing and singing along to the songs being played.

During the competitions everyone fought for points, but by the end the seniors came out victorious.Their prize, bragging rights and the beloved spirit stick that the student council introduced for this year. According to Jose Valle, Student Body President, he believes that this has been one of the most spirited assembly’s that the Juniors and Seniors have ever seen. He said, “Most everyone got into it. The Juniors and Seniors were definitely into it, but I know some people were upset about the fact that the Sophomores wouldn’t stand up. That's , they just came from being top dog at the Jr high, and now they are the bottom again.” The behavior of the Sophomores was a little disappointing, but hopefully their attitude will change over time.

Valle’s idea on why they didn’t get involved is mainly because of the tech problems which forced them to pick a side to talk to, and that made it more difficult for others to get into it. In the future Valle believes that the Sophomores will get more spirited and involved.

This assembly was the most attained assembly in a very long time, and Claire Rowley accredits that to the new assembly schedule. People were skipping assemblies because they could just sleep in and then come to first period afterwards, but since they put it after first period students were already there. Also, teachers were supposed to walk their students down to the gym and the teachers without a class and blocked the doors not letting kids sluff.

Overall, this assembly will be considered a success. It definitely got the students excited about this school year, and now everyone is pumped for the school year.
