History in the Making is the theme of the 2011 Payson High School Homecoming Week. Celebrating 100 years of Payson High history, the weekend will kick off Thursday Sept. 15 with a moonlight parade.
“We want to do something special and different for the 100th year and we hope the parade will achieve that,” said Payson High Student Body Advisor Melissa Brotherson.
Two Payson High School teachers are practicing what they preach. They aren’t just encouraging their students to develop and share their talents, they’re doing it too.
Payson High’s Stan Peck and Marilyn Morgan perform key roles in Payson Community Theatre’s production of Jekyll and Hyde. Peck plays Sir Danvers Carew, a man brutally murdered by Dr. Hyde, and Morgan plays Dr. Jekyll’s very proper Victorian fiancée, Emma Carew.
A tale of alter-egos and murder, Jekyll and Hyde isn’t typical musical theatre.
Normally when you think dissecting in biology you think of frogs and worms, but Mrs. Gowans’ biology class did the extraordinary, dogfish sharks. Not only is it exciting to say that you’ve dissected a shark, but there is great learning aspect to it as well. For starters, sharks are larger making it easier to see the individual organs. Mrs.
Earlier this year, physics students got to see a rocket test up at Promontory Point. Now physics students get the opportunity to build and test their own rockets, launching an egg up to four stories.
The seniors aren’t the only ones saying goodbye this year. Our very own Officer Shepherd will be saying so long to the halls and parking lots of Payson High as well. He will be missed by many, and is probably one of the coolest police officers our school could ask for. I know from experience, he helped me out a few times, like when I locked my keys in my car and he pried my door open and got them for me. He will be hard to replace!
The woodshop classes at Payson High School are holding the annual Cabientry Show this week in the main gym. "It was nice, there were a lot of very good projects!" said Brayden Walker. Coach Lunt worked hard with his students throught the year, there were over fifty projects in the show. "The kids did an outstanding job!" said Coach Lunt.
Friday’s pink game was a huge success. Our softball team put together an awesome fundraiser to raise money for Summer Simmons’ treatments. Payson played West Lake and in between each inning they auctioned something off. There was also a silent auction throughout the entire game. Local businesses such as Fat Jack’s Pizza, and Divas Salon donated stuff to be auctioned. “We are so glad we could put this fundraiser together to help out Summer. Our hearts are filled with sorrow for her. We would like to thank everyone who helped make this happen.
The PHS Dance Company showcase was a true success! “It was amazing!” said Hilary Frampton and Herlinda Limas. The theme for this year’s showcase was In the Spotlight. “I wanted the audience to see how talented the girls are. They are artist and were able to show their creativity,” said Dance Company coach, Rebekah Anderson.
Prom 2011 has come and gone, but what a week to remember. The senior Prom Queen and King were Tiara McCloud and Aaron Dalton. The girl attendants were Stephanie Hazelet and Jessica Uresti. The boys were Ramiro Salazar and Cameron Beckert. Junior prom King and Queen were Zach Eddington and Summer Simmons, and Sophmore King and Queen were Kaleb Wright and Grace Heaps.
At the annual Ken Garff Keys to Success Assembly held May 2 at Payson High School Ashley Rowley was award an Apple iPad, and Seth Thompson a $2,000 scholarship towards his college education. The assembly came as the culmination of the year long Ken Garff Keys to Success program run every year at the high school.
