Penny Wars was amazing once again this year, thanks to our very own student body. For two weeks Payson High School’s Student Council and LIA groups got together and carried around jars for our 2011 Penny wars. Our goal for this year was $2,012 and because of our fabulous students here at PHS we got over $2,500.

For the first time in Lion’s Roar history, a duo won the annual pie baking contest. Blake Barnett and Colton Robbins teamed up to make a pumpkin spice pie with cinnamon strudel.
“I thought it was really creative to put the strudel topping with the pumpkin pie. It was so good I had five pieces!” said Pie Judge Taylor Campbell.
The pair used a Bobby Flay recipe as the basis for their desert.

The Payson Lion Paysetters had their first invitational competition on December 3. They did very well, placing third with their character routine, (which is the western swing that was displayed at the Payson vs. Salem game.)
Cassidy Burton took first place in the drill down. The drill down is when someone is calling out military commands and the dancer does the commands.

On December 9, Payson High’s basketball team took on the Salem Hills Skyhawks our biggest rival as of late. Payson beat Salem Hills 60-40 a huge difference from last year’s memorable 20 point comeback. Led by senior captains Clint Bateman and Tanner Newbold; scoring 33 points between the two starting guards, Clint with 11 points and eight assists and Tanner with 22 points and five three pointers.

On December 14th the Payson Concert and Chamber Choirs had the opportunity to perform at the Assembly Hall on Temple Square.
This is but one of their many events and performances during the month of December. Our busy choir groups devote most of their Christmas month doing what they do best: sing.

This year Payson High’s musical was The Sound of Music. Set in the beginning of the Nazi movement into Austria, it’s about a woman who finds her place in a family and helps them reunite through music.

On November 9 over 20 NHS members gathered in the counseling office to tie fleece blankets for the homeless.
“It was nice to see so many people show up and offer their service,” said Co-President Mercedes John.

The marching band at Payson High school has always been one of the shining, winning groups at Payson High. Now one more year can be added onto their 30 year winning streak when the PHS Marching Band ended the 2011 fall season with 10 trophies and a second place award at the state competition.
“This was one of our most successful seasons,” said Mr. Collins. “This year we were younger, smaller, there were no superstars this year, but they all pulled together and the spirit of unity was stronger than ever before.”

It’s that time again; time for girls basketball to begin. Jumping into a new season, we have high hopes for the players. For years our girls basketball team has shown some seriously amazing talent, and this year promises to uphold that grand tradition. Our entire team (coaches and girls) are very dedicated and love what they do.
