Beloved Librarian Judy Skinner Starts a New Chapter

PHS Librarian, Judy Skinner, is retiring after a 24 year career in education. Skinner has been an employee at Payson High for 18 years, 6 years spent as a P.E. and health teacher, and 12 years as the librarian.

During her years as librarian Skinner has witnessed many advances in technology, including the addition of a new computer lab.

“It was really exciting to have the library remodeled and get a computer lab,” Skinner said.

PHS Sophomore Dallin Neaves Wins iPad from Ken Garff

Payson High School sophomore Dallin Neaves won an Apple iPad courtesy of the Ken Garff Keys to Success Program.

50 students nominated for Key Cards during the year had a chance to participate in the competition for the iPad during an assembly held at Payson High May 7. Neaves said the moment his name was called to compete he knew it was his lucky day.

“I had no doubt I was going to win when I stepped onto the basketball court. I was pretty pumped,” said Neaves.

PHS AP English and Honors Teacher Mrs. Earl Retires

Current students and alumni will remember for years their sophomore English, or AP literature class.  Controversial topics, classic literature, and especially the infamous poetry portfolio are all things we may remember, but what we will always remember is the teacher that taught us how to enjoy all types of literature, Mrs. Earl.

Darrin Wright Shares Importance of Education with Students of Payson High School

Darrin Wright of Wright Chiropractic was the guest speaker at Payson High School’s Windows on the Workplace, April 20. Wright spoke to the students about the difference between being a medical doctor and a chiropractor and the benefits of the two. Among other things chiropractors learn about nerves and bones in a way a doctor does not. Wright also shared the enjoyment of his profession with the students.

PHS Boys Tennis Ready for State

 The PHS tennis team uses being a young team to their advantage by using their quickness and high energy to shut down their opponent. Sitting second in region is a very hard earned spot. With only four seniors on this year’s team, most of their players will return next year. The seniors are Jordan Wood first singles, Connor Hart second singles, and doubles Jakob Johnson and Bryce Clyde.

PAYSON HIGH SCHOOL DANCE COMPANY IN CONCERT

Payson High School Dance Company is excited to announce their upcoming dance concert titled “Tangents”. The concert will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 3rd and 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the Payson High School Auditorium. General admission is $5.00, Student admission is $4.00, or $20.00 for an immediate family pass.

COACH MARJIE RALPH EARNS NATIONAL SPEECH AND DEBATE SCHOLARSHIP

Payson, Ut – April 5, 2012 

Coach Marjie Jo Ralph a speech and debate coach at Payson High School has been awarded a Coach Workshop Scholarship by the National Forensic League to Whitman College. The scholarship, which covers all fees was awarded competitively to outstanding speech and debate coaches based on applications to the program. Coach Ralph is one of just 66 Coach Workshop Scholarship recipients from across the country.  

PHS Tennis in Full Swing

Our Payson Lions Boys Tennis season has official started. Wednesday March 28 was the team’s
first region match they played at Spanish and showed the Dons how to play some real Tennis.
The coaches for the 2012 season are Karen Clark, Brennan Warren, and Craig Hancock. They
are coaching seven varsity players this year, they have two double teams and three singles. The
team captains this year are Jordan Wood and Conner Heart.

“We are definitely ready to take region this year!” said Bryce Clyde.

candidates worked hard for two weeks making posters, campaigning, and getting ready for their
big assembly that was on March 13.

Payson Highs debate team placed second at the debate region tournament. Congratulations to Anthony Wilcox, Megan Snow, Heather Reid, Ariane Keele, Alexis Cortez, Jessica Bastean, Nathan Womack, Ali Bufton, Juan Trujillo, Easton West, Kelsey Wood, and Nick Hindes on taking second place at the Region debate tournament and all qualifying for the state debate tournament.
