Ultra-Marathon Runner Jarom Thurston Visits PHS

Ultra-Marathon runner and Payson High graduate, Jarom Thurston, spoke to the students of PHS September 27 as part of the Windows on the Workplace program.

Thurston, a 1994 graduate of Payson, didn’t run while in high school. In fact he didn’t like to run at all and could barely even run a mile he said. It wasn’t until his brother started to train that he found his motivation.

“I thought if my younger brother can do it, I better see if I can do it too!” said Thurston.

Marching Band Takes the Field in Exhibition

            On September 17 Payson High School Marching Band went to a band competition at Orem High School.  This exhibition competition was an opportunity for the bands from Utah high schools and attendees perform their marching shows for music professionals and get critiqued on the show.

The students had a great experience, and for some it was the first real performance of their marching band careers.

Lady Lions Tennis “Serving” up a great Season

                The Lady Lions Tennis Team is amazing. They are currently 3rd place in region, and very close to taking 2nd.  They are still going strong as they climb over the middle of the season.

          There is no better way to calm the nerves before a football game than dancing to “The Boot Scoot an’ Boogey.”  After the fun in the locker room it was time to get serious as the coaches entered the room.   

Payson Boys Golf Second in Region

Payson High Boys Golf is number 2 in region just behind North Sanpete High School. Led by Coach Marilyn Miller, Payson’s team is 10 strong.

“We are doing really well,” said PHS junior Brandon Montague. “Our team averages a score of 325 – 330.”

The boys are headed to the state tournament Oct. 5, 6 at Fox Hollow in American Fork.

Lions Beat the Skyhawks

Aug—Playing in their first road game of the season, the Payson Lions traveled to Salem Hills High School to take on rival SkyHawks. 

Payson’s assistant coach Lloyd Mason motivated the team in a pre game speech. “We’re all in boys, now the question is; are you guys?”

Payson Cross Country: A Solid Start to a Good Season

The Payson High Cross Country team participated in a pre-region meet Aug. 31 at Spanish Fork.  A pre-cursor to the region championships, the team’s second place win, just 4 points under Juab High School, puts the team in a good position to take the region title.
